Tasting Note: Champagne AYALA Le Blanc de Blancs 2014

A coupe seemed like the right glass for Champagne AYALA Le Blanc de Blancs 2014 (by the way, as far as I know, you pronounce this ‘koop’, without the accent on the ‘e’). The reason why a coupe is appropriate for this delightful Champagne is because Ayala was a major hit in the roaring ‘20s, when you would have used this kind of glass.⁣

Coupes aren’t the most practical of glasses, especially at a raucous party (MUCHOS SPILLAGE) but they look bloody gorgeous. ⁣Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need loads of different shaped glasses to enjoy your wine - just one good glass will do. But glasses are nice and I do like to have a selection, not out of necessity, but more out of variety. If I had more cupboards, I’d probably have more glasses. ⁣

Now onto the Champagne. AYALA Le Blanc de Blancs 2014 showcases the beauty of pure Chardonnay. It’s bright in colour and in aroma, expressing clean, fresh lemon, alongside perfect flaky pastry. In fact, it brings to mind a delicious tarte au citron. ⁣

Fine, excited bubbles play on the tongue and I discover flavours of white peach, lime, baked apple and a drizzle of honey. It’s such a vibrant, youthful wine, which is so refreshing that it seems dangerously thirst-quenching! I could definitely shimmy some tassels on the dancefloor with this Champagne in tow. That’s when I might switch to a flute - I wouldn’t want this wine to jump out of my glass!⁣

AYALA was one of the original Grandes Marques Champagne Houses and Le Blanc de Blancs 2014 is the House’s signature wine, retailing at around the £50 mark.
