Exploring Tesco’s Vegan Wine Range

Most people don’t know that most wine isn’t vegan - and why it isn’t vegan. More vegan wines are appearing on the shelves now and are being labelled as so, but would a wine labelled as vegan put you off? And do vegan wines taste any different?

Skin + Pulp guest writer Jenni Allen aka @oliveandthevine explores Tesco’s vegan wine range to find out!

Did you know that not all wine is vegan?

Traditionally animal proteins are used in the filtering and fining process of winemaking. Vegan wines however leave sediment to settle, or instead use non animal products such as pea protein.

Nowadays there are a lot of vegan wines on the market, but it hasn't always been something that has been highlighted on the bottle.

However, more and more producers are choosing to highlight their wines with the classic vegan stamp - all in the aid of increasing customer awareness, ensuring you know exactly what is (or in this case what isn't) in your wine.

Top vegan wines from Tesco

Viñalba Reserve Malbec (2019 )| Valle de Uco, Mendoza Argentina | £10 - An intense nose full of fruit and bramble, vanilla and plum. Full-bodied red with a rich colour in the glass. Fun Fact, if you like your Bordeaux wines, head winemaker Hervé J. Fabre’s mix of traditional Bordeaux heritage and New World purity offer some super classy wines.

Tesco Finest Terre De Monteforte Pinot Grigio | Italy | £8 - Made with super ripe grapes this Pinot Grigio is for all of you who think PG doesn’t offer you oomph. Stone fruit, pear and lemon. Bold on the nose, soft on the palate.

The Pebble Sauvignon Blanc (2020)  | Val De Loire France | £9 - The Loire is known for its mineral flintiness characters in the wines - derived from the soil the grapes grow in. Lemon, apple, passionfruit with a flinty softness to it.

Tesco Finest Shiraz | Swartland, South Africa | £7.50 - Juicy and fruity red, full of cherry and plum, undercut with the classic Shiraz peppery spice. A big, intense wine at first but lacks a length on the finish - would be good with a BBQ, especially at that price!
