Rest-or-Ration?

Have you been practicing restoration this January? I have. But the question is… did you practice rest or ration? A rest from drinking this month or did you rationing what you did drink? Or… neither?

There has been a lot of talk about Dry January this year and I can understand that lots of people see it as a time to reset. Rather than the rest approach, I prefer the ration approach - having a little bit of what you fancy. ⁣

Pregnancy has actually helped me enjoy wine in a very different way. I’m tasting rather than drinking, and a rationed half a glass now and then with dinner brings untold amounts of pleasure! See below for roast chicken and white Burgundy heaven.⁣

At the same time, it’s a nice opportunity to try the zero alcohol stuff out there. It’s a great time to do it when everyone else is on board and you’re not a lone soldier. For a real treat, French Bloom tastes almost like the real thing and feels extra special.⁣

This time of restoration (or “rest or ration”) can be a real time of bliss, with walks in the open air, lots of opportunities to see a nice view and cosying up under blankets by the fire. I used to despise this time of year and couldn’t wait for brighter skies, but now I see it as a vital chance to catch a breath, as come February we’ll all be back on the hamster wheel.

Are you a rest or ration kind of person? Or are you a practitioner of neither?
